MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Jorge Antonio Saenz Jorge grew up just a few blocks from Haight-Ashbury in 1960s San Francisco, where he was exposed to countless explosions of art and culture that fostered his love for painting early on in his childhood. Jorge is a mixture of formal and self-taught training which he has tapped into throughout his artistic career Relying on his ever-evolving concept of color fields, he has hand-carved his own niche in the abstract realm, drawing inspiration from prolific artists like De Kooning, Rothko and Frankenthaler. A close glance at his work reveals multiple layers of shapes, patterns, and color fluctuation, often complemented with translucent drips and his unique shapes which he has spent years cultivating. His work has been described as mixture of fiery shapes both masculine and feminine at the same time. Over the years, Jorge’s work has been featured in local and national exhibitions where he has earned distinctions for the work presented. His artworks are sought after collectors and graces many homes in the US and abroad. He enjoys teaching his techniques and has done so at D’Art Center in Norfolk and the Virginia Beach Art Center. Currently he most enjoys perfecting his approach to cold wax and oil and is continuing his education with cold wax artists Rebecca Crowell, and Jerry McLaughlin. Jorge is currently the Art Curator for the Virginia Beach Art Center where he installs monthly exhibits that highlight seasoned and upcoming artists from the Hampton Roads area and beyond.

The Intermediate Segment is designed for student’s that have a good knowledge of the cold wax medium and how to apply it to the substrate. This segment is designed to weigh in heavily on composition and the analysis of it in the work the student is producing. The segment will focus on identifying hierarchy and visual weight within the work and how these vary and add importance to unity and finding problems within the composition and being able to address them. The segment focuses on how to correctly apply the medium and tools being used. If you have taken a cold wax medium course with Jorge in the past and feel that you do not need the beginner’s segment this is the right one for you.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an abstract master course in cold wax and oil paints, and each segment is intentionally designed to advance the student to the next level. The focus of the course is abstraction, composition and the implementation of the principles of design. Prior to starting any of the segments in the course you will receive instructions on homework to prepare for the class about one week before the start date. These are quick exercises designed to get the students focused on composition.

Each segment lasts four days at four hours each day. There is a fifteen-minute break if needed. There will be a one-hour exercise that will consist of creating one-hour paintings within each segment. The students will work on the same one-hour paintings each day of the segment. Throughout each segment there will be videos and open discussion that will be beneficial for the student as they learn the techniques. Each student will complete 1 painting per segment. They should be somewhat developed so we can have an open discussion as a group. Each student will enjoy one on one feedback with Jorge during the class.

Beginners must take segment one to advance to the next levels. Other students with knowledge of the medium must be proficient enough with the techniques needed for each segment.
