About The Artist:
Brittany "BeeJay" Johnson, a Virginia Beach native, graduated in 2008 from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor's degree in fine art, majoring in Art Education. Brittany is a signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists as well as an active board member and past president of The Chesapeake Bay Art Association.
The VB Art Center has had the honor of having Brittany's exquisite work grace our gallery walls during our recent Itsy-Bitsy Exhibition. You will also find her work at the International Society of Scratchboard Artists 14th Annual Exhibition, the VA MOCA - Where We Meet Exhibition as well as the 68th Annual VA MOCA Boardwalk Art Show! From Stockley Gardens to Charles Taylor Center of The Arts, the list of accolades is incredibly long!
Class Description:
Discover the beauty and precision of scratchboard in this hands-on masterclass led by award-winning artist Brittany “BeeJay” Johnson. Perfect for beginners, this workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of scratchboard art—a unique medium where dramatic images emerge by scratching away a dark surface to reveal the white layer beneath.
You’ll learn:
- About the medium of scratchboard
- How to use essential scratchboard tools and techniques
- Ways to create depth, texture, and detail through line work
- Step-by-step guidance as you complete your own scratchboard artwork
No prior experience is necessary, just bring your creativity and curiosity! All supplies are included, and you’ll leave with a finished piece plus the skills to continue exploring this striking medium on your own.
