Beginner Wheel Throwing with Grey Barona
Wednesdays, May 21st – July 9th, 12:30pm – 3:30pm
Ages: 18-99
Skill Level: Beginner and those with some experience
Class objectives:
- Learn the basics of handling clay and how to throw on the wheel
- Center the clay, pull, trim and finish pieces
- Introduction to glazing and firing
- Practice making cups, mugs, plates and bowls
Class includes 40-hours of Open Studio time for students to work on their projects
outside of class. Shelf must be cleared the last day of class unless student is signed
up for another session.
Supplies included:
-25-pound block of Clay, glazes and firing, use of studio tools and equipment
Supplies the student should bring:
-Basic pottery tool kit (optional), hand towel, apron or smock, small notebook
for notes and tracking pieces in the kiln
Week 1
-Introduction to Studio, Learn Basic Wheel processes (centering, coning, wall pulling)
-Will focus on bowl forms
Week 2
-Continuing bowl practice, working towards perfecting centering and wall pulling for taller and thinner forms
Week 3
-Tall cylinder forms/mug bodies
-Working on using more clay and getting height
Week 4
-Learn trimming and handle making and attaching
-Chat about kiln firings and form decoration through glazing
Week 5
-Glazing demo
-Continue working on previous forms and learn plates if students are interested
Week 6
-Workday, discuss surface decoration techniques, open to showing specific demos of forms
Week 7
-Workday, open to showing specific demos of forms
Week 8
-Final Day of Class
