Welcome to Beginner Pottery on the Wheel with Perry Kesting

Wednesdays, January 8th - February 26th, 12:30pm – 3:30pm (8 classes)

Ages: 18 - 99
Skill Level: Beginner and those with some experience

Class objectives:

• Learn the basics of handling clay and how to throw on the wheel
• Center the clay, pull, trim and finish pieces
• Introduction to glazing and firing
• Practice making cups, mugs, and bowls

Class includes 40-hours of Open Studio time for students to work on their projects outside of class. Shelf must be cleared the last day of class unless student is signed up for another session.

Supplies included:

• 25-pound block of Clay, glazes and firing, use of studio tools and equipment

Supplies the student should bring:

• Basic pottery tool kit (optional), hand towel, apron or smock, small notebook for notes and tracking pieces in the kiln

Week 1(Jan 8)

● Introduction to Studio, Wheel Introduction (centering, pulling walls, cylinders)

Week 2 (Jan 15)

● Continue to practice cylinders, aiming for 5-8 inches tall

Week 3 (Jan 22)

● Handles Demonstration, continue cylinders

Week 4 (Jan 29)

● Glazing Demonstration, practice cylinders and handles

Week 5 (Feb 5)

● Bowls Demonstration, Trimming Demonstration

Week 6 (Feb 12)

● Workday, practice bowls, trimming, and mugs, discuss surface decoration and altering on the wheel

Week 7 (Feb 19)

● Workday, practice bowls, trimming, and mugs

Week 8 (Feb 26)

● Final Day of Class,
