Splish Splash - Watercolor Painting Workshop with Barbara Mitchell
Saturday & Sunday, November 9th - 10th, 11:00am - 2:00pm (2-day workshop)
Class Description:
Join our Watercolor Studio Workshop. The course is designed for those with basic understanding and skill level in watercolor. We will explore various techniques while completing an amazing painting of a goose splashing around in the water. Being able to draw is NOT a requirement. A sketch and photo will be provided for tracing. Barbara will guide you through the process to create a stunning watercolor painting.
You will begin by transferring the image to your watercolor paper. Barbara will demonstrate the process of using masking fluid. This will be a fun process. We will splatter the masking to make the bubbles in the water of the goose splashing around. We will also use it to highlight the light in the painting. Barbara will show you how to show motion in the water. It’s a fun process and the result is something you will treasure. Barbara will give you instructions on blending colors and various painting techniques. Will begin painting the goose with a demonstration of shading while saving the light. The final phase will be completion of the background and removing the masking. There will be ample time for individual instruction and guidance.
Supplies:
- A resealable palette will be needed for your tube paints. The instructor used the following colors in completing the painting:
Naples Yellow
Perylene Green
Permanent Green
Ultramarine Blue
Paynes Gray
Similar colors are acceptable for the project. You may bring a spray bottle or eye dropper to wet your pallet.
2) Pen and Pencil
3) Kneaded Eraser
4) Water containers, either two separate containers or one with two wells
5) Paper Towels. The instructor prefers Viva Signature however, you may use what you have. Tissues if desired.
6) Graphite paper to transfer image to watercolor paper.
7) Brushes: Several sizes of round and flat brushes along with a large wash brush. Also bring a small and medium brush for masking.
8) Masking fluid. Barbara Prefers Winsor Newton or Pebeo. Since we will be splashing the masking fluid you may want to bring something like an apron or smock to protect your clothes. You will also need a small bar of soap to protect your brushes. Small hotel soaps are perfect. You will also need a rubber cement pick up for removing the masking.
9) This is a 14”X 20” painting. Barbara suggests either 300 lb. or 140 lb. cold press 100% cotton paper. The instructor recommends Arches, Saunders Waterford, or Fabriano Artistico paper. If you choose 140 lb. paper it should be in a pad or mounted on a board.
Suggestions on where to purchase supplies: Jerry’s Artarama in Va Beach and Hurtung Gallery and Art Supplies in Portsmouth are preferred, however some supplies can be found at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. Supplies can also be purchased online at Cheap Joe’s, Dick Blick, Amazon, and Jerry’s Artarama. There will be ample time for individual instruction and guidance throughout the workshop.
