Thursdays, September 5th - October 10th, 1:30pm - 4:00pm (6 week class)

Facebook Page: fb.me/Fiddlestickswatercolorart

Class Description:

*PREREQUISITE: This class Requires students to have taken Very Beginner Watercolor Techniques, Watercolor Painting Workshop, or had previous watercolor instruction (*please contact the instructor to discuss previous experience before signing up).

We will explore various techniques while creating several paintings during the 6 classroom sessions. Demonstrations will be part of each class. Photos to paint will be supplied by the instructor. Being able to draw is NOT a requirement for being successful at watercolor painting! Those who are comfortable drawing and sketching are encouraged to do so, but the use of graphite paper, Saral, or a light box is also acceptable.

Come join us for a few hours of creativity and fun each week! Collaboration is encouraged!

Supplies:

1.An 8x10 or 9x12 Block or Pad of 140 lb. Cold Press 100% cotton Watercolor paper. *The instructor recommends Arches (the only company that makes the 8x10 size block), Saunders Waterford or Fabriano Artistico. New York Central watercolor paper, which is carried locally at Jerry’s Artarama, is acceptable (made in China), but not preferred.

2.Practice Paper: Inexpensive 9x12 Cold Press Watercolor paper to be used as practice/scratch paper (SOHO & Fabriano both make 25% cotton watercolor paper that is good for practice & color testing).

3.A sealable watercolor palette. *The instructor recommends the Masterson Aqua-Pro Watercolor palette with 40 wells (this one is preferred for its large mixing areas) OR the Mijello Fusion Palette with 18 wells (smaller/a good travel palette).

4.Paint: Whatever watercolor paint you have in your palette. If interested in purchasing new colors, professional grade companies such as Daniel Smith, QOR, Sennelier, M Graham, DaVinci, Holbein & Winsor Newton are recommended. (QOR has a great starter set of 12 colors usually on sale online for $58 and 24 colors for around $103).A set of quality, budget-friendly, student grade paint in tubes (such as a Winsor Newton Cotman) or Turner is also fine.

*Instructor prefers watercolor paint tubes, NOT 1/2 pans. Low quality paint such as Marie's or Artists Loft are not recommended.

5.Brushes: Whatever watercolor brushes you currently have. A watercolor Round Brush that comes to a nice point, size 8 or 10 is recommended. A Quill brush for washes is also useful, with Raphael Soft Aqua #4 or #6 recommended. A small brush for fine detail is also useful, such as DaVinci Cosmotop Spin 10/0. *Instructor will discuss other brush options during this class

6.Pencil (soft is better)

7.“Vanish” Eraser or kneaded eraser

8.Small Spray/Spritzer bottle

9.Water container (1 or 2 containers…short, single serving wonton soup discards work great)

10. Roll of Paper towels (White/no prints) *Instructor recommends Viva Signature for its soft, cloth-like pliability

11. Tissues (for blotting)

12. Ruler

13.Masking Fluid (NOT! permanent masking) *instructor uses Pebeo or Turner.

14.An inexpensive, small brush (#2 or #3) for applying masking fluid (so you don't ruin a good brush)

15.Brush soap (either Pink Soap or The Master's...available at Jerry's Artarama) *Brush soap is used on the bristles BEFORE using Masking Fluid.

16.A watercolor paint tube of Payne's Grey for shadows. *Other paint color recommendations are Indigo, Neutral Tint, Daniel Smith’s Perylene Green.

17. Daler-Rowney Pro White OR White Gouache (Instructor uses both M Graham & Winsor Newton).

18.Saral Wax Free Transfer Paper- Color GRAPHITE or any graphite paper (for those of you who want to transfer an image rather than sketch)
