Navigating the challenges of Watercolor with Terry Wylie

Tuesdays, July 23 – August 27, 1:30 – 4:30pm (6-weeks)

Skill Level: Intermediate
Age Range: 18 and up

Class Description:

This class will explore a variety of techniques used in watercolor, you should have a basic understanding and skill level in watercolor to take this course. We will explore various compositional theories, and dive into color and values as it relates to watercolor and our topics. We will tackle problem solving and gain confidence as we take on unique and fun topics including Landscapes and Urban or structural paintings with some perspective thrown in. We will let the class choose between Figure Painting or Portrait. We will look at texture challenges like water, fur, rocks or feathers. We will explore how to choose a topic, how to simplify what you see, and what to consider when choosing a topic for painting. We will explore some loose open and free techniques and other techniques for tight realistic compositions. You will be provided references to start but will choose your own by the end of the class. You are encouraged to draw but it is not required, if you prefer to trace and or transfer. You will get one on one support and guidance as well as weekly demos and critiques. This is going to be fun and we are going to learn and grow together.

Supplies -

One Arches 11x14 140 lb. Cold Press watercolor block (please purchase this brand)

One Watercolor palette, your choice. Having a good mixing area is a plus.
Paper towels
Kneaded Eraser
Drawing Pencils
Pencil Sharpener
Mechanical Pencil (0.9mm) Pentel or Staedtler brand
Masking Tape 2"
Exacto Knife
Making Fluid (Windsor Newton brand recommended)
A cup for water

Brushes:

Round Brushes at least two, recommended a 12 and 14 size. I prefer Princeton Velvetouch, Silver Brush Black Velvet or Escoda, but any decent round brush will work fine.

Square Brush - Recommend two brushes, one 1/4 and one 1/2 inch. Having a 3/4 inch or full inch is great, but not required.

Optional

Rigger Brush - having one Rigger Brush is a plus, if not, please have a round brush with a good tip.

Mop Brush - Having a large Mop brush is a big plus. I would recommend a good size Mop for large washes.

I will demo several types of brushes, including Mops, Chinese calligraphy brush, scubers, Hake and others but you will not be required to have any.

or 10/12 set of Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor tubes. An affordable alternative.
