Oil Portrait Painting Class
Tuesdays, April 9 - May 28 (8 weeks)
10:30am - 1:00pm

Painting the Portrait in Oil for intermediate or advanced painters. Basic drawing skills required.

This course is designed for painters with an intermediate level of painting skills. Basic drawing skills required.

Students do not need experience painting portraits but must have experience working with oils and basic drawing skills.

Each week the class will be introduced to a different aspect of portrait painting, ranging from the planar head to full color renditions of the human face.

A variety of Images will be supplied by the instructor for the first 6 weeks of class. Students will be encouraged to paint a portrait from their own photos for the last two sessions.

Portraits will be head and shoulder studies, these will range from black and white, then tonal studies finally working in full color. The focus will be on placement, measurements, paint application and mixing colors for a variety of skin tones.

Week I: Planar head in black and white. Understanding the planes of the human head.

Week II Notan: Painting the big shapes. Simplify the subject. Tonal painting

Week III Developing the envelope. Mixing flesh tones with a limited palette.

Week IV Female

Week V Male

Week VI Student choice from photos. How to take photos for a portrait painting

Week VII Painting from personal photo.

Week VIII Painting from personal photo new or continue.

Supplies:

Requires solvents mediums and containers to hold these liquids while painting.

Oil Paints

bring the following required colors: Yellow ocher, Burnt sienna, Cadmium Red light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Umber, Ultramarine blue, Phthalo blue, Titanium White and Ivory Black.

Other colors may be included if you have them.

Gamsol or other odorless thinner

Oil painting medium will be supplied by the instructor

Stay wet Palette box with glass for laying out colors 12x16

Disposable palette paper optional for more mixing space.

Oil painting brushes: Line, Filbert and Flat range of sizes from 2- 8

Painting surfaces: size No larger than 12x16 no smaller than 11x14. Canvas, Oil painting panels or Oil papers may be used.
