X 2023-A2 - Sumi-e (Chinese Ink Painting) with Norene Spencer

In this class you will learn the basics of traditional East Asian Brush Painting, frequently called Sumi-e. Instructor, Norene Spencer will present this class with a very brief history of the art form before you learn the proper use of materials and the traditional brush strokes used to create the beautiful of this ancient art form. Once the techniques of handling the brush are learned, you will begin painting Bamboo and Spring Orchid, two of the main subjects taught beginners to become comfortable with the essential strokes of sumi-e painting.

This class is designed for adults and accepts mature students 16+.

Note, the industries that manufacture sumi-e supplies do not have quality controls and there are a wide variety of options, many not worth their value. For this reason, I highly recommend ordering your brush, and paper from one of the two suppliers noted below; these suppliers stand behind their products and their products have been tested by knowledgeable sumi-e artists.

• bamboo brush
• liquid sumi-ink
• rice paper for practice, semi-sized

Additional supplies:

• palette(6-8inch) or multiple white plates(3-8inch) as a palette
• Felt (about 24x36 inches), or any absorbent solid color fabric with no nap
• Paper Towel or rag
• Paper weights, flat river rocks work well
• Water Bowl
