Breaking the Rules - Ceramics with Samara Dallaire

Wednesdays, October 21st - December 16th, 12:30pm – 3:30pm

***NO CLASS ON NOVEMBER 25TH IN OBSERVANCE OF THANKSGIVING. ***

Ages: 18-99

**Skill Level - Intermediate to Advanced**

Course Overview

This class will explore the line where functional pottery and sculpture meet by intentionally breaking the "rules" of how clay should be handled. As long as safety and cleanliness rules are being upheld, the instructor intends for students to push clay to its limits.

Students will be encouraged to pursue work that combines both figurative and abstract clay-making techniques in a way that beautifully expresses each student's narrative with the true nature of clay.

This class will include both wheel and sculpture demonstrations, but wheel experience is not required.

Some of the things that will be emphasized include:

• Combining wheel-throwing and hand-building

• Achieving different surfaces with glazes, underglazes, engobes, etc.

• Working with molds

• Stretching, ripping, and manipulating clay

• Combining other media with clay

• How to conceptualize your own work

Included with Registration

• One 25-lb block of clay
• Supervised access to glazes and a basic overview of firing
• Use of studio tools and equipment
• All classes include a 10-visit punch card for Open Studio time for students to work on projects between classes. Open Studio access ends 10 weeks from the date of the first class.
