Join watercolor artist Barbara Mitchell for an enjoyable class focused on capturing the unique personality and expression of pets and children. Whether you’re painting a beloved pet or treasured child, you’ll learn techniques that bring warmth, life, and character to your portraits.
Students are welcome to bring their own high-quality reference photo to create a meaningful, and one-of-a-kind painting. If you prefer, you may also follow along with the instructor’s demonstration using the provided reference. Individual guidance will be provided to help each student succeed, regardless of whether they are working from their own reference or the instructor’s.
Every face tells a story-learn to capture it in watercolor.
Supplies:
1. A 10 X 14 block of 140 lb. or 300 lb. cold or hot press 100% cotton paper (students' preference). If you choose 140 lb. paper that is not in a block it should be taped to a board. The instructor suggests Arches, New York Central, or Layton blocks but any quality paper will do.
2. A sealable watercolor palette.
3. Paint: The instructor suggests artist or professional quality tube paints. Bring your
complete palette. The colors that will be needed for your fist painting are as follows:
Ultra Marine Blue
Burnt Sienna
Cerulean Blue
Paynes Gray
Naples Yellow
Similar colors are acceptable.
4. Brushes: You will need a variety of round brushes and a wash brush. Suggest that you
bring your collection of brushes.
5. Pencil, pen, and kneaded eraser.
6. Spray bottle or eye dropper to wet palette.
7. Water containers. Either one divided container or two separate containers.
8. Paper towels.
9. Removable Masking Fluid. You will also need a bar of soap and a brush for the masking.
10. Saral Transfer paper for those who choose to transfer their image.
11. Students that are using their own reference should bring a high-quality photo suitable for
reference and if desired, appropriate size to trace. Those following Barbara’s painting will
be provided with a reference photo that they can trace if desired.
