Learning to Draw to Gain Artistic Confidence with Corinne Lilyard-Mitchell

Tuesdays, September 8th - October 13th, 10:30am - 1:00pm (6-week class)

This course is for beginning students with little to no drawing skills or for those who want to enhance their drawing abilities by learning to see better.

This course is based on the concepts developed by Betty Edwards in her book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

Students will begin by creating three pre instruction drawings prior to the beginning of class. These drawings will be turned in on the first day and kept until the final class to show the progress gained through the course. Drawings may be done on one sheet of drawing paper, or individually on plain computer paper.

Draw the following by looking directly at your subject. Do not use a photo. Just do the best you can at this point in the process.

Your hand

A chair

The Corner of a room

Week I - Drawing is a teachable skill

Understanding the role of the brain in learning to draw.

Vase face exercise

Blind contour drawing

Modified contour

Week II - Edges/ lines

Drawing objects using a modified contour line

Week III - Spaces/ Negative and positive shapes

Drawing objects using modified contour lines to describe negative and positive shapes in and between subjects.

Week IV - Relationships/ Measuring and sighting techniques for accuracy.

Continuing to use a modified contour line and negative and positive shapes. This drawing will include using various sighting and measuring techniques to learn to see relationships.

Drawing the corner of a room in perspective

Week V and VI - Light and Dark/ Developing Values

Develop still life subjects into a complete drawing by combining concepts from earlier lessons Including the practice of shading to develop form.

Each week there will be various exercises to practice at home for those interested.

Drawing paper options White: or Ivory (Recommend Soho) no pad smaller than 14x17

80lbs Strathmore 400 series 18 x 24

135lb Soho Urban heavyweight drawing paper 14 x 17 or 18 x 24

92 Lb. Soho Drawing paper. 14 x 17 or 18 x 24

Drawing pencils 2b, 4b, 6b, Ebony

Pencil sharpener small plastic or metal

White eraser.

Kneaded eraser
