Class Description:
*PREREQUISITE: This class Requires students to have taken Watercolor 2 or have similar previous watercolor instruction/experience.
This class is a continuation of the watercolor journey for students who have taken Very Beginner Watercolor Techniques & have also completed Watercolor 2 (or a similar stage 2 class) but are looking for a class to bridge the gap before trying Intermediate Watercolor.
We will explore various techniques while creating a new painting each week from photographs during the 4 classroom sessions. Demonstrations will be part of each class. Photos will be supplied by the instructor, but students may also bring in their own photos to create a painting. Being able to draw is NOT a requirement for being successful at watercolor painting! Those who are comfortable drawing and sketching are encouraged to do so, but the use of transfer paper or a light box is also acceptable.
Come join us for a few hours of creativity and fun each week! Collaboration is encouraged!
Supplies:
1.An 8x10 or 9x12 Block or Pad of 140 lb. Cold Pressed 100% cotton Watercolor paper. *The instructor recommends Arches (the only company that makes the 8x10 size block), Saunders Waterford or Fabriano Artistico. New York Central paper, which is carried locally at Jerry’s Artarama, is acceptable (although made in China and not always consistent).
2.Practice Paper: Inexpensive 9x12 Cold Pressed Watercolor paper to be used for practice/color testing (SOHO & Fabriano both make 25% cotton watercolor paper that is good for practice).
3.A sealable watercolor palette that travels well to class.
4. Paint: Whatever watercolor paint you have in your palette. If interested in purchasing new colors, professional grade companies such as Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, QOR, Sennelier, M Graham, DaVinci, American Journey, Holbein, & MaimeriBlu are recommended. Mid-grade paint such as Turner is also fine.
*Instructor prefers watercolor paint tubes. Low-quality paint such as Marie's or Artists Loft or any dye-based paints are not recommended.
5.Brushes: Whatever watercolor brushes you currently have. A watercolor Round Brush that comes to a nice point, size 8 or 10 is recommended as well as a Quill brush for washes. *Instructor is happy to discuss other brush options during this class
6.Pencil
7.Any eraser that erases pencil/graphite (Vanish Erasers are recommended).
8.Small Spray/Spritzer bottle (the ones that deliver the correct amount of spray are in the watercolor aisle at Jerry’s)
9.Water container (1 or 2 containers…short, single serving wonton soup discards work great)
10. Roll of Paper towels (White/no prints) *Instructor recommends Viva Signature for its soft, cloth-like pliability
11. Ruler (because you never know when you’ll need it)
12.Masking Fluid (NOT! permanent masking) *instructor uses Pebeo Drawing Gum (only available online), Winsor & Newton or Turner masking are also good.
13.An inexpensive, small brush for applying masking fluid (so you don't ruin a good brush)
14.Brush soap (either Pink Soap or The Master's...available at Jerry's Artarama) *Brush soap is used on the bristles BEFORE using Masking Fluid.
15.A watercolor paint tube of Payne's Grey (instructor prefers Winsor Newton) for shadows. *Other paint color recommendations are: WN Indigo, Neutral Tint, Perylene Green.
16. Daler-Rowney Pro White (preferred)OR White Gouache (Instructor uses both M Graham & Winsor & Newton).
17.Saral Wax Free Transfer Paper- Color GRAPHITE (for students who want to transfer an image rather than sketch)
