Virginia Beach Art Center - Pottery Studio

This class has a bit of everything. It is mostly geared towards beginner and intermediate students. However, accomplished wheel throwers are also welcome if you want to work on leveling up. The initial sessions are focused on getting started with wheel throwing basics. Topics covered include wheel set up, posture, centering, coning and creating your first pieces. In later sessions, those who a want to explore hand building we explore working with the slab roller, extruder and molds. You pick the direction you want to go with your clay journey and Todd will help you get there.

About the Instructor

Todd started his clay journey in 1998 when he got the clay bug from a friend and built his own kick wheel and picked up a 2^nd hand kiln. After too many worn out shoes, he got his first “real” pottery wheel. A Brent CXC, which he still uses to this day. Todd is self-taught so he understands there are messes and mess ups on the way to learning the craft. No pressure!!! It’s all about having fun, learning, community and crafting. Come join us and have some fun!

All classes include a 15-visit punch card for Open Studio time for students to work on projects between classes. Open Studio access ends 10 weeks from the date of the first class.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

• Apron – will get dirty (that's the fun, right?)
• Hand Towel – will get dirty
• Basic Pottery Tool Kit
• Notebook/journal for notes, to track firing of your pieces, etc.

Supplies included:

• 25-pound block of brown or white clay
• Glazing and firing

No outside clay allowed.
