Beginner Wheel with Diana Scofield

Skill Level: Beginner (and those with some experience)

This is a get-your-hands-dirty class that concentrates on basic wheel throwing techniques and the processes necessary to turn a lump of clay into a finished usable form.Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting clay on. Each class will include a short demonstration and instruction. The majority of class time is spent practicing your skills on the wheel. Create bowls, mugs, plates, vases and whatever else you imagine.

Objectives:

• Understand basic clay preparation, handling, storing and recycling.

• Learn foundational wheel throwing techniques including how to center, open, pull, trim, and finish wheel-thrown forms.

• Explore basic glazing techniques.

• Understand the basics of bisque and kiln firing processes.

• Complete simple functional forms.

Included with Registration:

• One 25-pound block of clay. More is available for purchase. No outside clay is allowed.

• A storage shelf for your personal class materials. The shelf must be cleared on the last day of class if you are not signed up for the next session.

• The use of studio tools and equipment.

• Supervised access to glazes and firings.

• A 15-visit punch card for Open Studio access providing time to work independently on projects between classes. Open Studio access ends 10 weeks from the date of the first class.

What to Bring

• Basic pottery tool kit (example: Kemper brand "Original Pottery Tool Kit”). If you do not wish to purchase, you may use studio provided and shared tools.

• Hand towel

• Apron or smock

• Small notebook for notes
