Beginner Wheel with Diana Scofield

Sundays, March 15th - May 3rd, 8:30am - 11:30am

Skill Level: Beginner (and those with some experience)

This is a get-your-hands-dirty class that concentrates on basic wheel throwing techniques and the processes necessary to turn a lump of clay into a finished usable form. Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting clay on. Each class will include a short demonstration and instruction. The majority of class is spent practicing your skills on the wheel. Create bowls, mugs, plates, vases and whatever else you imagine.

Core objectives include:

Handling and storing clay

Throwing techniques: coning, centering, opening, pulling, and refining

Trimming and finishing pieces to prepare for bisquing

Basic glazing techniques and firing

Class includes Open Studio time for students to work on their projects outside of class. A shelf is assigned for use during the class period to store and keep materials but must be cleared the last day of class unless student is signed

up for another session.

Supplies included:

-25-pound block of Clay, glazes and firing, use of studio tools and equipment

Supplies the student should bring:

-Basic pottery tool kit, hand towel, apron or smock, small notebook

for notes and tracking pieces in the kiln
